Precise dipole moment and quadrupole coupling constants of benzonitrile

Cyanobenzenes have recently been suggested as good candidates for the detection of aromatic molecules in interstellar space [1–3], partly due to their large dipole moments. The simplest molecule from this class is benzonitrile (C6H5CN), which might be detectable, for example, in the proto-planetary nebula CRL 618 [1, 2]. These predictions are based on an assumed abundance of 10 and a dipole moment of 4.3D [1], and they are related to the detection of similar molecular species (benzene (C6H6), diacetylene (C4H2), and triacetylene (C6H2)) in CRL 618 [4]. Moreover, due to its large dipole moment and therefore its large Stark-effect-to-mass ratio benzonitrile is a prime candidate for the electrostatic deceleration and trapping of large molecules using the Alternate Gradient focusing principle [5].
